What is 5S ? Explain all Five 'S'


What is 5S ?

5S :-  5S is a Simple term that were firstly used in Japan . It was used firstly by Toyoda Production System. 5S is simple term but very effective to manage workplace area.5S help us to find abnormalities. 

"5S is simple but very effective term that is used to maintain the workplace area in any organisation to find abnormalities & maintain Safety ."

Why we used 5S ?
1. Maintaining Workplace area
2. Maintaining Safety 
3. Finding Abnormalities
4. For best Performance
5. Increase Efficiency 

5S term used in Japanese and English both languages.

In Japanese Language

1S - Seiri 
2S - Seiton
3S - Seiso
4S - Shiketsu
5S - Shitsuke

In Enlish Language

1S - Sort 
2S - Systematic arrangement 
3S - Shine or Cleaning 
4S - Standardization 
5S - Self Discipline 

lets explain these total 5S one by one .

1. Seiri or Sort :-
In  1S , As per name . In first S ,we sort out the Unwanted material from  Wanted material . It means which material we need , we put it on the workplace. and Unwanted material that we don't want we remove it from workplace area.

2. Seiton or Systematic Arrangement : - 
In 2S , we arrange the wanted  material as per standard processes.
It means ,we arrange the material  step by step process ,so that we can easily do the process or for making the process smoothly.

3. Seiso or Clean:-
In 3S , after systematic arranging , we clean the workplace regularly for best performance ,Safety & good appearance .

4. Shiketsu Or Standardization:-
In 4S , when we arrange the material as per process step by step ,  ,so we Standardization all process as per  Sequence. It helps new persons  to understand all the processes.

5. Shitsuke or Self-discipline:-
In 5S ,this is the last S , Organisation helps to arrange the training programs to aware the employees. And it is the duty for every employee to use last 5S , because If we do 5S , then we automatically follow all the S.
